Why buying Monero directly can be harder than buying Bitcoin

Monero hides the sender, receiver and amount of every transaction. That is exactly why people want it, and also why fewer large regulated exchanges list it than list Bitcoin or Ethereum, and why availability differs by country. Before you deposit money anywhere to buy XMR directly, check that the platform lists XMR in your region and lets you withdraw it to your own wallet. Monero that stays on an exchange account is not private: the exchange knows exactly who owns it.

The simple route: swap into Monero from a coin you already have

Most people get Monero in two steps. First, hold a widely available coin: Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Solana, Cardano or USDT. Second, swap it into XMR and have the Monero paid straight to your own wallet. On VeriSwap the second step needs no account and no ID. You choose the pair, enter the amount, paste your Monero address and send from your wallet. The order shows one exact receive amount with the 0.5% service fee already included, valid for 15 minutes. The most requested routes are BTC to XMR and ETH to XMR.

  • Holding BTC? Use BTC → XMR.
  • Holding ETH? Use ETH → XMR, sending native ETH on Ethereum mainnet.
  • Holding stablecoins or other coins? USDT, LTC, SOL and ADA all swap into XMR.

Set up your Monero wallet first

You need a Monero address to receive into. The official GUI and CLI wallets are published on getmonero.org; download from the official page and verify the signature. A standard Monero address is 95 characters and starts with 4; a subaddress starts with 8 and is the better choice for receiving. Write down the 25-word seed when the wallet is created and never type it into any website, including ours: a swap only ever needs your receiving address. Incoming Monero unlocks after 10 confirmations, about 20 minutes.

Peer-to-peer options

If you want to buy Monero for cash or a bank payment without a central exchange, peer-to-peer marketplaces exist. Haveno describes itself as a decentralised exchange for crypto and fiat built on Tor and Monero. Bisq is a decentralised peer-to-peer Bitcoin exchange with no registration, which you can use to get Bitcoin and then swap into Monero. Peer-to-peer trading has its own risks: payment fraud, slow trades and bank transfers that leave a record on the fiat side. Read each platform’s own guides before trading.

What it costs

On VeriSwap the 0.5% service fee is already inside the receive amount shown in your order, and your wallet pays the network fee for sending the deposit. Compare that receive amount with any other route for the same amount at the same moment; that single number captures the rate, the fee and any spread. The XMR pair pages also show a market reference rate from Kraken with a timestamp, so you can sanity-check a quote before you send.

Common mistakes when buying Monero

Most problems are avoidable.

  • Leaving XMR on an exchange account, where it is tied to your identity.
  • Pasting a Bitcoin or exchange address that does not accept XMR as the receiving address.
  • Typing the wallet’s 25-word seed anywhere online.
  • Sending a different amount than the order states, or after the 15-minute quote expires.
