USDT networks: TRC20 vs ERC20 vs Solana, and the swap route

Match the asset and the network

Read the sending platform’s withdrawal network and compare it with the live order. ERC-20 refers to the Ethereum token route; TRC-20 refers to the TRON token route. The same USDT balance label can hide different network choices. Stop if the two sides do not match.

Account for the cost of sending

A self-custody Ethereum wallet needs ETH to pay gas when sending ERC-20 tokens. A hosted exchange may instead deduct its own withdrawal charge. That cost can be separate from the swap quote, so compare the total sending cost and the amount that will reach the order.

TRC20 vs ERC20: what actually differs

ERC-20 USDT lives on Ethereum and uses 0x addresses; TRC-20 USDT lives on TRON and uses addresses that start with T. Both are the same Tether token on different chains. The practical difference is the cost of moving it. On Ethereum every transfer pays gas in ETH, and the cost rises when the network is busy. On TRON a token transfer consumes resources called Energy and Bandwidth: each account gets 600 free Bandwidth points a day but no free Energy, so unless you have staked or rented Energy, TRX is burned to cover it. Either way you need the chain’s own coin in the wallet before you can send USDT.

• ERC-20: 0x address, fee paid in ETH, accepted almost everywhere.
• TRC-20: T address, fee paid in TRX (burned for Energy), popular on exchanges.
• An ERC-20 deposit cannot be credited on TRON, and the reverse.

USDT on Solana (SPL)

Tether also issues USDT on Solana as an SPL token. A Solana wallet such as Phantom or Solflare shows one address for SOL and all its tokens. Fees are small and paid in SOL: the base fee is 5,000 lamports (0.000005 SOL) per signature. To hold a token the wallet needs a token account, which needs a small refundable deposit; when someone sends you USDT for the first time, the sender can pay for it. You still need some SOL to send the USDT onward.

The receiving coin has its own network

For USDT → BTC, prepare a Bitcoin receiving wallet. For USDT → XMR, prepare a Monero receiving wallet. The USDT sending network does not become the destination network; a cross-chain swap changes the asset you receive.
